COMMUNITY SERVICE
The caring quilters of ESQ gladly share their time and talents with many community organizations. Over the years we have made Dresses for Africa, pillowcases for Sophia Way and Children's Hospital, lap quilts for patients at Overlake Hospital, and patriotic quilts for veterans through Quilts of Valor. We have also provided quilts for display at area retirement homes. Fabric and batting donations for our outreach programs are always gratefully accepted. Currently our project focus is on the charitable organizations listed below. *** Click here or on the Gallery drop-down tab to see pictures of items made! *** Stay & Sew workshops may be scheduled throughout the year to work on these projects and to further develop friendships among our members.

Many seniors find it challenging to access healthy food or cook nutritious meals and risk malnutrition due to decreased appetite, limited mobility, and dietary restrictions. That’s where Meals on Wheels comes in, serving good, healthy meals designed to ensure seniors get the nutrition they need. It starts with the meal and delivers so much more, helping seniors improve their health, feel more secure, and live independently. Meals on Wheels serves 1500 seniors in King County and ESQ is doing its part to brighten up those meal trays with quilted placemats. They are easy to make, 12ish inches by 15ish inches in size, pieced with scraps, charm squares, strips, or leftover blocks. Pre-washed, pre-shrunk cotton flannel makes a perfect batting for this project.
EvergreenHealth Hospice
EvergreenHealth Hospice clinicians like to welcome patients with the gift of a lovingly handmade quilt. The quilts we at Eastside Quilters make and donate are treasured by the patients (the hospice staff often hear “someone made this, just for me?!”) and become treasured keepsakes for the families EvergreenHealth Hospice serves in King and Snohomish counties. It is one of their most cherished traditions, made possible by the hard work and kind donations from Eastside Quilters.

Pediatric Interim Care Center (PICC)
PICC provides 24-hour medical monitoring and nursing care to fill the gap between hospital and home for infants recovering from prenatal drug exposures or other medical difficulties. PICC’s pioneering program also facilitates visitation for families, provides caregiver training, follows the babies after they leave, and offers a range of community outreach and education services. Founded in 1990, PICC's model program has given more than 3,100 infants a safe and healthy start in life.

Car Seat Quilts. PICC, Treehouse, and the YWCA have all requested car seat quilts in a finished size of 25” by 30”. These are easy to make using 30 charm squares, a jelly roll, or fat quarters. A complete tutorial for how to make a car seat/stroller quilt can be found here: https://www.cloverandviolet.com/2019/06/sophie-car-seat-quilt-free-pattern.html. This pattern is fancier than you may want to attempt, but it gives a good description of how to make and place the ties and how much fabric you will need for backing, binding, and batting. We suggest you attach the ties before sewing on the binding for additional strength.

The Forgotten Children's Fund
The Forgotten Children's Fund is an all volunteer organization that works to give underprivileged children and their families a truly Merry Christmas. With the support of the Seattle-area community, they purchase, wrap, and have Santa and his Elves deliver gifts every year. Families are selected on the basis of need and are typically not assisted by other public or charitable organizations. FCF currently operates in western Washington (King, Lewis, Skagit, Island, Snohomish, Whatcom, and Chelan counties). Each child receives a new winter coat; 3 toys or gifts; 2 books; a hat, gloves, and socks; a stocking stuffed with goodies; warm blankets for the families; and food for Christmas dinner and extra staples.
